The conceptualisation of ASPIRE program started in the year 2002 and the program was launched formally by the MD of Tata Steel (Mr. B. Muthuraman) on 2nd of May, 2003.
The initiation happened when Tata Steel launched its new vision (‘VISION 2007’) in May 2002, which focussed on becoming an EVA positive company and also sustaining and improving EVA year on year, even during average steel price scenario. Thus the challenge was to become EVA positive under normal steel prices and not be dependent on favourable market conditions. It was felt that an integrated improvement structure is needed to accelerate the speed of change to be able to achieve the Vision (of becoming EVA positive) and keep adding value to the stakeholders year after year despite the cyclicity in steel industry. An integrated improvement program named ASPIRE, acronym for Aspirational Initiatives to Retain Excellence, was launched as a vehicle to achieve this goal.
“...ASPIRE is a vehicle to accelerate, to run faster and to fly. The challenge to become EVA+ under normal average steel prices is very, very steep. No other Steel company in the world has achieved this so far. But ASPIRE will help us succeed, and make Tata Steel EVA+ and improve EVA year on year...”

The program, instead of only focusing on tools and techniques focuses on the power of mind. ASPIRE philosophy evolves around self confidence and desire to excel.
